Burton's given their classics line a complete overhaul. If you've been riding Covert or Prowess jackets, here's what you need to know about what's replacing them.
What's Changed with Burton Reserve?
The classics line has been replaced with the new Reserve line. This collection has a much cleaner, fresher aesthetic with trickle-down learnings from the success of Burton's premium AK line.
Here's the genius bit: it's based on one jacket design, adapted to suit you. You can buy this style in Gore-Tex, in 3-in-1, in slim, in insulated, in 2L, in relaxed; there are some nuances, but the goal was simple. Burton wanted riders to easily identify which jacket they should go for based on their ideal preferences.
And this isn't just a Reserve thing. This tiered system will extend to the AK line next year.

Breaking Down the Three Tiers
All Reserve jackets are a minimum 20k waterproof and fully seam-sealed. The difference comes down to fit options, layering systems, and premium features.

Core Tier: Where the Fit Options Live
This is the key insight about Core: it's where all the different fits live. Within the Core range, you'll find slim and relaxed cuts, plus anorak options. It's the entry point to the Reserve line, giving you solid tech at the best price point.
All slimmer-fitting products are made with a slightly softer stretch fabric. Despite the slimmer fit, this allows the product to move with you. They also have stretch panels, including in the lining, to eliminate any restrictions.
3-in-1 Tier: Maximum Versatility
Here's what makes the 3-in-1 brilliant: one jacket that adapts to any weather. It features a shell with a popper-in insulated liner (not a zipper system like most brands). Wear them together when it's freezing, just the shell when it's mild, or the liner as a standalone puffer around town.
The 3-in-1 shares the same outer fabric with the Core tier, so you're getting the same 20k waterproof protection. The difference is you're essentially getting three jackets in one.
Gore-Tex Tier: Premium Features & Trust
Gore-Tex brings a household-trusted name that's guaranteed to keep you dry. Gore-Tex doesn't put ratings on their products; they use their trademark guarantee instead.
The Gore-Tex tier comes with an elevated feature package: waterproof zips, more pockets, and higher-quality trims. It's available in both 2L and insulated options. Colour runs across the Core and 3-in-1 products, but Gore-Tex has a separate colourway to highlight its elevated status.
What do we reckon will be popular? Gore-Tex products are the sweet spot, premium quality at a good price. And relaxed fits? They're going to be everywhere this season.
Is Gore-Tex Worth the Extra $400?
Since all Reserve jackets are 20k waterproof and fully seam-sealed, what makes the Gore tier worth the extra spend?
It comes down to materials and tech packages. The Gore tier delivers more pockets, better quality zips, and premium materials. It's the difference between excellent protection and absolute confidence in the worst conditions.
Understanding the Fits: Slim, Regular, Relaxed
Burton offers three fit options across the Reserve line:
-
Slim: Tailored style built for movement and effortless layering
-
Regular: The sweet spot between snug and relaxed—not too tight, not too baggy
-
Relaxed: More breathing room, but not in oversized territory
Worth noting: Jackets are roomier than everyday outerwear to allow for proper layering. On really cold days, you need space for additional clothes underneath.
Relaxed Fits Are Trending
Reserve's relaxed fit sits in a sweet spot, more room than regular, but not as oversized as Burton's Futuretrust baggy line. Think of it as a "stepping stone" into the baggy aesthetic for riders who aren't quite ready for full oversized territory.
Insulated or Shell? Here's How to Choose
There's a mixture of insulated and shell options in both the Core and Gore lines. You can shop depending on your snow destination and whether you run hot or cold.
One of our team members will never run in an insulated jacket, while their best friend would never not wear one. Both have options across the price range within Reserve.
If you're only on the mountain in deep winter, lean towards insulated. If you're up there in shoulder seasons or want versatility, the shell might be for you.
A note on Sustainability
The Reserve line is Bluesign approved and made without intentionally added PFAS. Burton holds B-Corp status and has been increasing recycled materials in their products year over year. They're committed to high sustainability targets with regular updates on their progress.
Our Advice
-
Come into store if possible. Our staff can recommend based on their experience and knowledge of what works for different riders and their needs.
-
Don't be afraid to mix and match across styles and sizes. If you want to rock the relaxed XL pants but only an L jacket, and you want the jacket to be Gore, go for it. You'll be aligned with exactly how Burton's team riders build their outfits too.
-
Most importantly: You'll ride best when you think you look sick!
