Saving Money on a Snow Trip in New South Wales

A Guide to Affordable Fun on the Slopes

Heading to the Snowy Mountains this winter?

A snow trip in New South Wales can be expensive, but with some careful planning and savvy decisions you can enjoy the slopes and keep your budget intact.

After reading this blog post, you can holiday like a pro without breaking the bank (if you follow our wisdom of course).

1. BUY SECOND HAND

The initial outlay in buying your own gear might seem like a lot, but you’ll save big money in the long run. Rhythm Snowsports has a range of ex-demo, retail quality, skis and snowboards, with huge brands such as Armada, Black Crows, Burton, Volkl and many more. Come into the store and see what we have available.

Prices are generally between the $200 to $700 mark – when you do the math, it means you’ll start saving by your 7th day on the slopes.

2. Become a member

Get 10% off almost everything at Rhythm Snowsports in-store and online, just by becoming a member! It’s free and super quick to join. The memberships perks include keeping all your purchase warranties in your account AND being the first to know about exclusive deals and events.

Rhythm also offers up to 15% off hires for university students, certain schools and seniors – just don’t forget your ID card when you visit us in-store.

3. consider all resort options

You are spoiled for choice in the Snowy Mountains, you have four awesome resorts to choose from - Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass and Selwyn!

they all offer something unique – make sure you do your research, so you get the most bang for your buck depending on what you want out of your ski holiday.

Here's a super quick breakdown of the ski resorts across NSW*.

4. bring your own food

Better for you, better for the environment and better for your wallet.

Packing your lunch, snacks or even just remembering your reusable water bottle can save you hundreds of dollars a day if you’re feeding a family. Many ski resorts have designated picnic areas where you can enjoy your packed lunch. Remember to leave no trace.

If you’re staying for an extended period, there is also a load of accommodation options across the Snowy Mountains and on the snow that have kitchen facilities so you can save money on eating out in the evenings as well.

5. Share the costs

Travelling with friends or family can reduce individual expenses. You can split the cost of travel, accomodation and food. Many accomodation places offer reduced rates for larger groups.

6. pre-book your hire

Pre-book your hire, your lift pass, your accommodation – everything, pre-book everything. Early bird discounts are your best friend. Not only are you going to save some dollars by planning ahead, but you’ll also have it all locked down which takes the pressure off and turns the excitement on.

Rhythm Snowsports offers 10% discount when you pre-book your gear with us online. Keep your eyes peeled on our socials, because before the new winter season begins we announce special offerings for pre book rentals.

7. consider a half-day ticket

Being out in the snow is tiring, especially if the weather isn’t cooperating and it can be exhausting if you have small children. Jumping in half-way comes with two added bonuses aside from saving you money – it’s less stress in having to get up and go early or if you need to leave the mountain early to head home, you are not wasting money on a full day ticket.

All the major resorts offer a half-day lift ticket option that is valid for either the morning (until 1pm) or the afternoon (from 12 noon) for up to half the price of a full day ticket.

If you’re staying away from the snow, waiting for the traffic to die down and heading in for an afternoon ski is the reduced pressure your holiday deserves. The warmer afternoons also mean it’ll be a lot more comfortable.

8. take advantage of free or low-cost activities

If you’ve got small kids or you’re just in for some SnowPlay, Rhythm has complete SnowPlay packages to get you kitted out with everything you need to focus on just having fun. Adult packages start at $65 for the day and kids just $50 (even cheaper if you book in advance) and includes Apre Boots, Waterproof jacket and pants and a toboggan.

For the more adventurous and experienced, backcountry is a very low-cost activity. All you need is your gear, good conditions and you are ready to go.

9. TRY OFF SEASON

Choosing to visit the snow during off-peak periods, such as weekdays or early or late in the season, can significantly reduce costs. Accommodation, lift tickets, and equipment rentals tend to be more affordable during these times. Keep an eye out for special deals and packages offered by ski resorts.

The winter season runs from June long weekend to October long weekend in New South Wales. Off season for Snowy Mountains resorts is between June and July and August to October if snow falls are good.

Rhythm Snowsports is open all year round and 24 hours in the winter months - so we're always on hand to help, whatever time of year!
