Ski Boot Fitting Guide & FAQs
What a boot fit is, why it matters, and what to expect at Rhythm Snowsports
As skiers, we often complain about uncomfortable boots and secretly envy how soft snowboard boots look. If you’ve ever had a boot that doesn’t fit properly, you’ll understand why.
While some skiers can buy a boot off the shelf and be perfectly happy, the majority benefit significantly from a proper boot fit. Ski boots are one of the biggest factors in comfort and control on snow, and it’s a pretty rough feeling when you only realise something’s wrong once you’re halfway through day one.
This is where expert help makes a difference. Our team fit thousands of boots each year and know how to get the right fit the first time. We’re confident enough in the process that we even offer a boot fit guarantee.
What is a ski boot fit?
A ski boot fit is the process of selecting and shaping a boot to match your foot and help you ski the way you want to ski. The goal is a snug, supportive fit that improves control and comfort — without pain.
A boot fit can involve:
- Heat moulding
- Custom orthotics / footbeds
- Heel raisers
- Liner adjustments
During a fitting, we measure and assess your feet, including ankle flexibility and foot mechanics. We’ll also chat about your skiing style and what you like doing on your skis — whether you’re cruising groomers, chasing performance, or mixing it up across the mountain. We factor in your ability level too.
Boot selection is a key part of the fitting process, but we can also work with existing boots (new off-the-shelf or used). If you’re considering new ski boots, we recommend getting a boot fit before purchasing — it usually means fewer modifications later and a better result from the start. Your boot fit is included in the price when you buy boots from Rhythm Snowsports.
When should I get a boot fit?
If you’re replacing your boots, or your current boots are causing pain, a boot fit is the best move. Despite popular opinion, ski boots shouldn’t hurt. You might be relieved to take them off at the end of the day, but they shouldn’t be creating sharp pain or pressure.
A ski boot fit can:
- Improve comfort on the slopes, including reducing pressure points
- Improve performance and control
- Help work around injuries and foot issues, and reduce the risk of new ones
- Give you access to experienced boot-fit professionals to match you with the right setup
At Rhythm Snowsports we offer a boot fit guarantee. If you get up the hill and something isn’t quite right, bring them back and we’ll work with you to sort the pain points. We want you to actually love your new boots.
What do I need to bring or wear to a boot fit?
You don’t need to show up in full kit, but you will need to:
- Bring ski socks — ideally one of your thinner pairs so we can start with a close fit
- Bring any custom insoles / orthotics you usually wear
- Avoid skinny jeans or anything you can’t roll up to your knees
If you’re getting your current boots re-fitted, bring those along too.
If you’d like our workshop to adjust your new boots to your bindings / skis (this is included with boot purchases), bring those as well. During peak season the workshop gets busy, so it can be worth booking separately — just tell the team you’re doing a boot fit and they’ll guide you.
How should I choose my new ski boots?
If you’re buying new boots, we recommend coming in for a boot fit before you purchase. We’ll assess your foot shape and mobility, talk through what you like doing on snow, then recommend a few boots that match your needs. Once you’ve chosen the right one, we’ll customise the fit.
There are loads of boots on the market with different flex patterns, fits and intended uses. Our team knows the boot market inside out and can help narrow it down fast. A boot fit is included when you buy your boots from Rhythm.
If you’ve already bought new boots, or want your existing boots refitted, that’s totally fine too — we’ll work with you to get the fit right.
Can I get my current ski boots fitted?
Yes, you can. There may be some limitations — especially if they’ve been heavily modified in the past — but our team will help you find the best path forward.
It’s also worth noting: boot materials have changed a lot over the last decade. If your boots are more than five years old, we’d recommend giving us a call first to make sure a refit is the right option and that we’ll be able to help. If we can, we absolutely will — but sometimes upgrading is the smarter move.
How long does a ski boot fit take?
We recommend allowing around one hour. Sometimes it’s shorter (as quick as 30 minutes), and sometimes longer depending on foot shape and any pre-existing conditions. In most cases, you’ll walk out with boots ready to ski.
Can you work around my foot condition or injury?
Often, yes. From bunions to pressure points and unusual foot shapes, our team have seen a wide variety of foot variations and know which boots and techniques can keep you comfortable.
For example, with bunions, some boots have design features that make it easier to create space around the forefoot, sometimes up to around 15mm, to reduce pressure.
For injuries, if you can’t weight-bear or you have swelling, it’s usually best to come back later — otherwise we’re unlikely to be able to lock in the right fit. That said, we’ve helped people who still wanted to get up the mountain despite an injury. We don’t generally recommend it (because some changes can be permanent), but we can talk through options.
Can I use orthopaedic insoles or custom orthotics in my ski boots?
Yes, you can. However, we often recommend a ski-specific custom footbed instead. If you wear orthotics day-to-day, it’s very likely you’ll benefit from proper support in ski boots too.
The cost of the insole is additional to boot fitting, but moulding is included with the price of the insole. You can also purchase custom insoles separately from a boot fit.
Who can do boot fittings?
There’s no single formal qualification for boot fitting, but experience matters — a lot. By coincidence, our team have strong medical knowledge across the group, which helps when it comes to understanding feet, biomechanics and pressure points. They’re also keen skiers, so they understand how boots behave on snow.
Will my new ski boots stretch?
When we fit ski boots, we aim for a very snug fit. It shouldn’t be painful, but you also shouldn’t have excess room. As you ski, the liners pack out and mould to your feet — so if the boot isn’t close enough initially, you can end up with too much space later.
With boot fitting, it’s easier to make space than it is to fill space.
Do you do kids ski boot fittings?
Yes — we fit boots for both kids and adults, as well as racers and competitive skiers. For kids, we often aim for a little room for growth while still keeping the fit secure and supportive.
How much does ski boot fitting cost?
Boot fitting starts at $15 for existing boots and is free with the purchase of new boots. For full pricing details, head to our boot fitting page here.
