What is Gore-Tex technology?
Gore-tex is a technology that is water and windproof while remaining extremely breathable making it perfect for the Snowy Mountains in Australia, it stops rain from getting in but allows perspiration to escape. Gore-tex is made from 3 layers, 2 layers of Nylon with a layer of Teflon (porous fluoropolymer membrane) in between. This membrane has about 9 million pores per square inch. Each pore is less than one micrometer, one millionth of a meter, in diameter, that is less than one fiftieth of a human hair. This explains why water can’t get in but because perspiration is in a different form it can escape reducing overheating.
There are 3 types of GORE-TEX® fabrics:
Gore-tex Pro is designed for ultimate protection and durability in harsh conditions
Gore-tex Active is ideal for fast-and-light mountain travel
Gore-tex is intended for all-around durable protection.
The Gore-Tex technology is an extremely light weight material that is found in a lot of clothing from hiking boots to jackets. Tops brands like The North Face and Burton create clothing using the Gore-tex technology.
For example Gatekeeper Ski Jacket by The North Face:
This jacket maintains feminine style while incorporating premium GORE-TEX®, ThermoBall™ and PrimaLoft® sport technology; it’s built for skiing but has a modern aesthetic for year-round wear.
The AK 2L Swash Snowboard Pants by Burton:Shell Fabric: Gore-Tex 2L
Waterproof/breathability: 20,000+mm/20,000+gm GORE-TEX®
Seam Sealing: Fully Taped Seams (GORE SEAM Tape)
Gore-tex products may have a slightly higher price tag but they will keep you warm and dry at the snow, definitely worth the investment!
