The Oyuki brand was born in the minds of its creators as they ploughed endless turns through the powder fields of Niseko.
Inspired by the clean, simple and functional lines of traditional Japanese design and tested amid Niseko’s extreme snowy and cold conditions the Oyuki glove and mitt range is the ultimate in cold weather essentials.
Oyuki explain it themselves: “Designed and rigorously tested by our team of riders our products are refined in their simplicity. We spend time in the mountains with our product and continually listen to the winter to produce relevant fit for purpose gloves and mitts that keep us doing what we love, smashing pow in the mountains. At the heart of our design philosophy is the understanding that that simplicity is the key to functionality. We believe that above all else our designs need to be functional, reliable and made from only the best quality materials. Our range is made tough, breathable and waterproof using quality fabrics including goatskin leather, PrimaLoft® GOLD Insulation and top of the line PORELLE® Dry waterproof inserts.”
This year Oyuki released their Shaka Mitt. They wanted to develop something that represents the ‘tamashii’ (spirit) of riding Japanese powder. The Shaka Mitt’s unique design is not just a practical way of conveying good vibes, it’s also a highly effective piece of apparel for skiing and snowboarding. Housing three fingers together creates a cosy, cave-like environment in which body heat can be shared. Leaving the pinky finger free is also advantageous because this tiny digit contributes to around half of your overall hand strength. By not hindering its movement, skiers and snowboarders are gaining dexterity without compromising on warmth.
The ‘Shaka’ is a mitt that utilises goatskin leather (as many of their gloves and mitts do), a material that is naturally water resistant and hardwearing. Leather is also very pliable so the mitt quite literally fits like a glove, allowing riders to easily grasp their poles and do up snowboard bindings. Its aesthetics are understated and raw, mirroring the unrefined qualities of its birthplace. Each Shaka Mitt is made by hand.
