Buying Guide

Intro
Intro

Choosing new cross country skis can feel overwhelming with so many options out there. The key is to focus on what really matters - your destination, ski style, budget, and the skis flex, weight, length and base . Getting the specs right will set you up for a great time on the mountain. Whether speed is your top priority, or stability and versatility rank higher on the wishlist, there ARE a set of skis out there for you - and we can help you find them!

How To Size
How To Size

How To Size Your XC Skis:

Unfortunately there is no clear rule or guide on how to measure the perfect length ski for a skier in Skate and Classic as the flex of the ski and the weight of the skier will determine the best fit.

Weight Ranges:

Many manufactors will put a weight range guide on the ski to help skiers find their perfect fit, but this can also be tested in store using a flex testing tool.

The ski flex is important as it will determine how the ski glides underfoot, and for classic how it both grips and glides. Experience and ski style are also imprortant to consider. A stronger, more experienced skier may opt for a slightly stiffer ski, while a beginner might find a shorter and softer ski easier to handle.

Ski Length:

While ski length should never be your ONLY guide - the weight/flex is really important! - it is still important in your ski selection. Here is a general guide:

  • SKATE - choose a length that’s about 5–15 cm taller than the skier.
  • CLASSIC - choose a length that’s about 15–25 cm taller than the skier.

If you’re between two sizes, remember that longer skis glide better but are less maneuverable; a trade-off that matters more for beginners or tight trails.

Base Care
Base Care

The base of your ski is much like your skin - it needs mosturing every now and then to stay smooth and healthy. How often you wax your skis will depend on; how often you use them, where you store them and the abrasivnes of the snow your skiing on.

Frequency: For skiers, skiing 3+ times a week, a fortnightly wax would be resonable, weekly preferable and monthly minimal. If you don't have the gear or space to have your own set-up and you hit the trails only a few times a season, you should minimally ensure you get a storage wax put on during the off season, and ideally one additional wax mid season.

Storage Wax: If you only get one wax a season make sure it's a storage wax for the off season! Skis bases are porous and sensitive to changes in tempreture and humidity. A storage wax wil keep the ski from drying out and becoming brittle.
