This Saturday (6th August) is the beginning of Cross Country week at Perisher. The week includes a series of individual events for both experienced and new comers to the sport. For those who love tradition, three of the main events have been running for over 40 years. Considering the relatively short history of skiing in Australia, these races have been key long-term events within the XC skiing community in Australia.
XC Ski Week is a week for all whether you're a beginner, a seasoned racer or a recreational skier. Have a go and be a part of a week-long celebration of this awesome sport which often people dismiss. Besides the activity itself you will get to see parts of Australia and the Snowy Mountains that you have never seen before. Sometimes when you are downhill skiing or boarding you don’t take the time to fully appreciate the view.
During XC Ski Week there is plenty of camaraderie. The XC community appreciates and welcomes new skiers from different regions and backgrounds with varying skills and abilities - the common thread being our love for cross country skiing. Last year we sent Emily from our back office who had never been on any form of cross country skis. She joined one of the mystery coffee tours and the group taught her the technique of light touring skiing. She returned absolutely beaming with a million photos.
Prize giving celebrations for each event are held only in the warmest of locations spread between Smiggin Holes, Perisher and Charlotte Pass with food and drink either supplied or available.
The goal of Perisher Cross Country (PXC) is to spread the word so that everyone has a chance to find out first hand how good the other side of the car park can be.
Cross country skiing is the perfect alternative for anyone who wants to get/stay fit, take it easy or maybe can’t afford the price tag that comes with a day ticket when resort skiing. Seriously, if you have ever wanted to give it a go this is the week to do it. You’ll be truly impressed by the community spirit of the club.
